I should say right now that my knowledge of correct terminology is very limited but I think you know what I am talking about. The side frames need to be built up in thickness to give a good base to glue the journal assemblies to. To make sure these sit vertical make certain the tops of the strips line up. As you can see the first inner one on the left does not. The third piece was added using the rule to align it.
